With the release of the Swidget Outlet, smart homes may look a little different in the near future.
This new smart home invention combines a variety of different smart devices into one – the smart plug.
Swidget’s novel approach to the smart plug uses interchangeable inserts to give owners greater control over their home.
The Swidget design has two elements – the outlet itself and the Inserts. As a smart plug, the Swidget allows you to turn appliances on or off remotely. With the inserts, however, the Swidget’s functionality increases.
These inserts act as independent smart devices such as carbon monoxide detectors, motion sensors, wireless boosters, Bluetooth speakers, USB chargers, lights, aromatherapy, white noise, and temperature or humidity sensors. The Swidget even has an insert that acts as an Alexa Repeater.
In addition, some of Swidget’s Inserts are compatible with WiFi, Z-Wave, and ZigBee, allowing the device to fit seamlessly into existing smart homes.
The Swidget seems rather simple – using a home’s existing wiring, owners can embed smart tech right into the walls of their home. Owners have the ability to swap out the modular inserts when they’d like to further customize their smart homes.
Backers of the Kickstarter were offered a variety of funding levels, ranging from $1 to $136. Backers who committed $500 received the Swidget Development Kit to work on their own ideas for inserts. The kit includes test cables, a USB power monitor, blank test inserts, and the Swidget Outlet Simulation Board to work on
Of their original $40,000 fundraising goal, Swidget raised over $100,000. Hopefully we’ll see this new outlet in the near future!
Currently, Swidget hopes to ship the Swidget Outlet in June of 2018.
