Security is the first reason why people invest in an home automation system. Depending on your needs and the security level you require, there are a lot of solutions available on the market. Here are some tips about what you should consider first.
Most of the time, security is associated with burglary. But you should also consider the matter of your own safety.
A smoke sensor can save your life. But why should you use a connected one ? For example, if a fire starts during the night, you could automatically switch all the lights on, open the blinds, unlock the front door or anything else that could help you get to a safe place. Some sensors also have the ability to detect carbon monoxide which can be lethal (for example the Nest Protect 2nd gen).
Connected sensors can also send you remote alerts so that you can warn the neighbors or even the fire department.
Do you want to be aware of the incoming and outgoing in your house ? Do you want to be able to monitor the inside of your place when you are away ? Do you want to be able to scare away burglars ? All of the above ?
There are a lot of alarm systems that could fulfil your requirements, all with their weaknesses and strength. If you rely on this system for your own safety, make sure that it’s wired and not only using radio frequencies as they can be jammed easily. And check also that your system has a secondary power supply in case of a power outage.
If you are searching for an “all included” security system, then one of the most famous in the U.S. is the Vivint home security system.
If you just want to control that everything is OK at home, then regular motion sensors and IP cameras may do the job. Some cams are also able to detect movement and even to recognize your face like the Netatmo Welcome.
For those who know Synology and their famous NAS, they offer a surveillance solution called Surveillance Station which supports a lot of IP cameras. And even if your camera doesn’t support motion detection, the surveillance station does!
Do you have valuable or sensitive electronic devices such as a home cinema or an expensive computer ? Then you should consider buying an UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). It has two main advantages. First, it contains a battery allowing your equipment to continue working even if there is a power outage. Second, depending on the type of UPS, it protects your devices by regulating the voltage for example in case of a lightning storm. At home, we invested some months ago in an APC Back-UPS Pro and we are quite happy about it ! (it saved our New Year’s Eve when we had a power failure and it also protected our server 2 or 3 times already)
If you have already experienced a leak in your house then you probably know how devastating it can be. There are small sensors (like the Fibaro flood sensor) that you can put in sensitive places like near your washing machine, under your water heater or behind your toilets which could save you a lot of money! Those sensors will warn you in case of a flood and with the assistance of a connected water shutoff system you would be able to stop the leak before it does too much damages.
