Have you ever missed a phone call because your cellphone was in another room? Would you like someone to read you the news during your breakfast or to tell you what is the weather forecast for the day? What if, wherever you go in your house, you could listen to the same music flawlessly ? A connected audio system with the right equipment can fulfill all these functions.
You may have heard about multi-room audio systems. With them, you can synchronize the music you listen to between multiple speakers. This way, your favorite songs will just follow you around your place.
One of the most famous brands which have democratized multi-room audio was the Logitech Squeezebox system. But it has been discontinued in 2012. If you are an advanced reader, there are still open source systems based on the Logitech Squeezebox server. We will talk about them in a future post.
Since Logitech has been out of this market, Sonos has been growing and is now the leader in this area. They have quite a lot of different equipment from speakers to home theaters solutions that you can find on their website.
Now, the really cool thing is to integrate those audio systems into you Smart Home system and unleash their power!
Let’s say that you have motion sensors in your house. You start playing your favorite song in the living room… But you are thirsty and you go to the kitchen to get a glass of water… the music follows you in the kitchen! You won’t have to do anything or touch any remote, the music will follow you everywhere by detecting your presence in the room and turning it down when you move to another room. And don’t think that this is either priceless or science fiction, we have the same system at home and it didn’t cost us a lot of money.
Another great thing about those systems is that they are able to do voice synthesis. So in addition to playing music, they can also read any text you want. (Note that we are not talking about voice recognition: the ability to recognize what you say, but only the capacity to say something. We will address voice control possibilities in a next post)
Let’s take an example: at home, when we are about to leave, if it is going to rain in the next hour, then “JARVIS” (that’s how we call our “vocal assistant”) reminds us to take an umbrella.
If you receive a text message, it can also read it to you… I let you imagine all the possibilities that this offers! Just know that depending on your special requirements, it might take some time to set up (whether you do it yourself or with the assistance of a specialist).
We are sure that you are now picturing your whole house playing music or talking to you.
Let us know in the comments what you have done or would do with such a system!
